Recipes+API.SH

Recipes API

Search recipes with diet, cuisine and time filters, and turn any recipe page into structured JSON.

The API.SH Recipes API searches BBC Good Food's recipes with its filters: cuisine, diet (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, healthy), difficulty, meal type, total time, calories, servings and rating, sorted by relevance, newest, rating or quickest, with facet counts for every filter. With site=allrecipes it searches Allrecipes instead. The recipe endpoint reads a recipe page on any website that publishes schema.org Recipe data and returns name, authors, image, prep, cook and total time, yield, ingredients split into quantity, unit, item and note, category, cuisine, nutrition, rating and video. The method steps stay on the original page (linked).

API.SH vs the official Recipes API

BBC Good Food and Allrecipes do not offer public recipe APIs. Recipe databases such as TheMealDB (free test key for development), Spoonacular and Edamam serve their own collections; API.SH instead searches these two sites and reads schema.org recipe data from any recipe URL you pass.

Spoonacular and Edamam suit apps that need a curated database with full method steps and deep nutrition analysis; TheMealDB is fine for learning projects. API.SH suits apps that work from real publisher recipes and links, with one key shared with its other data and no recipe scraper to maintain.

Recipes API questions

What recipe data can I get?+

Recipe search on BBC Good Food or Allrecipes with filters, ratings, images and facets (/recipes/v1/search), and any recipe URL as structured data with ingredients, times, yield, nutrition, rating and video (/recipes/v1/recipe).

How much does the recipe API cost?+

Every Recipes endpoint costs 1 credit per call. On a monthly plan 1,000 credits cost $1 (Starter is $50/month for 50,000 credits). Pay-as-you-go is $2 per 1,000 credits, with top-ups from $15 that never expire.

Is there a free recipe API?+

Yes. Every account gets 1,000 free credits every month. That is 1,000 calls to /recipes/v1/recipe at 1 credit each. TheMealDB also has a free test key for development; API.SH covers real publisher recipes and any recipe URL.

Where does the data come from?+

Search uses BBC Good Food (or Allrecipes with site=allrecipes). The recipe endpoint reads schema.org Recipe data that sites such as BBC Good Food, Simply Recipes, Serious Eats, NYT Cooking previews and food blogs publish on their pages.

Do I need keys for the underlying sources?+

No. One API.SH key covers both endpoints, and no account on any recipe site is needed.

Is there an Allrecipes API?+

Allrecipes has no public API. Call /recipes/v1/search with site=allrecipes for title, link, star rating, rating count, category and image, then pass a recipe link to /recipes/v1/recipe for ingredients and times.

Does it return the cooking steps?+

It returns the number of method steps and a link; the method text itself stays on the publisher's page. Ingredients come both as written and split into quantity, unit, item and note.

How do I get started?+

1. Sign up at api.sh. 2. Copy your API key. 3. Call /recipes/v1/search with q=chicken curry and diet=healthy, then pass a result link to /recipes/v1/recipe. Every parameter and request example is in the docs at https://api.sh/docs. You can also use the JS or Python SDK, Google Sheets, Zapier, Make, n8n or the MCP server at https://api.sh/mcp so an AI agent can call it.
