Energy API

European day-ahead power prices, generation by source and Great Britain's grid carbon intensity from one key.

The API.SH Energy API covers wholesale electricity markets and grid data. Get day-ahead electricity prices for European bidding zones in EUR/MWh, at 15-minute or hourly resolution, for a day or a range up to 31 days with min, max and average; tomorrow's prices appear around 13:00 CET. Pull public net generation by source (wind, solar, gas, coal, nuclear, hydro, biomass and more), load, residual load, cross-border trading and renewable share for a European country. For Great Britain, read grid carbon intensity in gCO2/kWh with its generation mix, nationally, by region or by outward postcode, now or as a forecast up to 48 hours.

What you can build with the Energy API

Smart charging and home automation

Read tomorrow's day-ahead prices for your bidding zone and schedule EV charging, heat pumps or batteries into the cheapest hours.

Carbon-aware computing and scheduling

Check Great Britain's carbon intensity forecast for a postcode or region and move flexible workloads to the lowest-carbon half hours.

Energy market dashboards

Chart day-ahead prices next to generation by source, load and renewable share for a country to show what drives price spikes.

Renewable share reporting

Pull up to 7 days of generation per call with averages and peaks per source and the period's average renewable share of generation and of load.

Regional grid maps

Get current carbon intensity, index and generation mix for every Great Britain region in one call and color a map from very low to very high.

Energy data you get

Field names from real responses. Numbers come parsed, URLs absolute, dates in ISO 8601.

Energy API endpoints and prices

Every Energy endpoint costs 1 credit per call: credits are $1 per 1,000 on a monthly plan, $2 pay-as-you-go. Pricing

Why API.SH for Energy data

  • Public data only: no Energy login, cookies or account needed
  • One key and one response shape for Energy and 482 other platforms
  • Built and maintained by API.SH, not third-party publishers
  • Pay per call; errors on our side cost nothing
  • Live status for every endpoint

API.SH vs the official Energy API

Free public sources exist: the Energy-Charts API publishes European generation and price data with rate limits for public use, Great Britain's grid carbon intensity is published openly, and the EIA covers US electricity. API.SH joins European day-ahead prices, generation by source and GB carbon intensity behind one key and one JSON shape, with consistent date parameters and no rate-limit setup. It does not cover US prices or retail tariffs.

Commercial feeds such as ICIS, Montel and Electricity Maps target traders and enterprises, and tariff APIs like Octopus Agile cover one supplier. API.SH is a simple pay-per-call option for wholesale day-ahead prices and grid data across Europe.

Energy API questions

What energy data can I get?+

Day-ahead wholesale electricity prices for European bidding zones (/energy/v1/prices), electricity generation by source, load and renewable share for European countries (/energy/v1/generation), Great Britain grid carbon intensity now or forecast, nationally or by region or postcode (/energy/v1/carbon-intensity), and current carbon intensity for every GB region (/energy/v1/carbon-regions).

How much does the Energy API cost?+

Every Energy endpoint costs 1 credit per call. On a monthly plan 1,000 credits cost $1 (Starter is $50/month for 50,000 credits). Pay-as-you-go is $2 per 1,000 credits, with top-ups from $15 that never expire.

Is there a free electricity prices API?+

Yes. Every account gets 1,000 free credits every month. That is 1,000 calls to /energy/v1/carbon-intensity at 1 credit each. Free public sources such as the Energy-Charts API also exist, with rate limits for public use.

Where does the data come from?+

From public market and grid data: day-ahead auction prices for European bidding zones, public net generation figures for European countries, and the published carbon intensity data for Great Britain's electricity grid.

Do I need keys for the underlying sources?+

No. One API.SH key covers every energy route.

Which countries and zones are covered?+

Day-ahead prices cover European bidding zones such as DE-LU, FR, NL, ES, the Nordic and Italian zones and others; generation covers European countries plus an EU total. Carbon intensity is Great Britain only. US electricity prices are not included.

Does it return retail electricity rates per kWh?+

No. Prices are wholesale day-ahead prices in EUR/MWh, before network charges, taxes and supplier margins. They are what dynamic tariffs follow, but they are not the rate on a household bill.

How do I get started?+

1. Sign up at api.sh. 2. Copy your API key. 3. Call /energy/v1/prices with zone set to DE-LU and a date. Request examples and every parameter are in the docs at https://api.sh/docs. You can also use the JS or Python SDK, Google Sheets, Zapier, Make, n8n or the MCP server at https://api.sh/mcp.
