API.SH vs the official OpenCritic API
OpenCritic offers an official API through RapidAPI with Swagger documentation, and a per-game data export for communities. API.SH returns the same public scores and reviews in its standard JSON format with one key shared across your other data sources, without a RapidAPI subscription.
Compared with the OpenCritic scraper on Apify or old Kaggle datasets, API.SH gives you live scores, reviews and new releases at a fixed price per call.
OpenCritic API questions
What OpenCritic data can I get?+
Games by platform, period and genre (/opencritic/v1/browse), one game with scores, tier, platforms, companies and store prices (/opencritic/v1/game), its critic reviews (/opencritic/v1/reviews) and this year's Hall of Fame with new and upcoming releases (/opencritic/v1/hall-of-fame).
How much does the OpenCritic API cost?+
Every OpenCritic endpoint costs 1 credit per call. On a monthly plan 1,000 credits cost $1 (Starter is $50/month for 50,000 credits). Pay-as-you-go is $2 per 1,000 credits, with top-ups from $15 that never expire.
Is there a free trial?+
Yes. Every account gets 1,000 free credits every month. That is 1,000 calls to /opencritic/v1/browse at 1 credit each.
Is there an official OpenCritic API?+
Yes. OpenCritic publishes an API on RapidAPI, documented on SwaggerHub. API.SH is an alternative with one key and one JSON format across many platforms, and no separate RapidAPI plan.
Do I need an OpenCritic account or API key?+
No. You only need your API.SH key. API.SH reads public OpenCritic pages, and no endpoint uses a login.
Is there a free OpenCritic API?+
Every API.SH account gets 1,000 free credits each month, enough to try every OpenCritic route. After that you pay per call, and failed calls are free.
Can I get scores normalized to 100?+
Yes. /opencritic/v1/reviews returns each review's score as the outlet published it (stars, out of 10, letter grade) and normalized to 100, and /opencritic/v1/game returns the Top Critic Average and median score.
How do I get started?+
1. Sign up at api.sh. 2. Copy your API key. 3. Call /opencritic/v1/game with the url of an OpenCritic game page, or /opencritic/v1/browse with a platform. Request examples and every parameter are in the docs at https://api.sh/docs. You can also use the JS or Python SDK, Google Sheets, Zapier, Make, n8n or the MCP server at https://api.sh/mcp.
