+Barcode Lookup API
Turn a UPC, EAN or GTIN barcode into product name, brand, ingredients, allergens and nutrition facts as JSON.
The API.SH Barcode Lookup API returns a product by its barcode. Send an EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E or GTIN-14: the check digit is verified and UPC-E codes are expanded for you. The product comes from open product databases covering food, cosmetics, pet food and other products, with name, brands, quantity, categories, labels, origins, stores, packaging, ingredients, allergens, additives, vegan and vegetarian flags and nutrition facts per 100 g and per serving. Every record says which source it came from and under which open license.

Food scanning and nutrition apps
Scan a barcode in your app and show calories, fat, sugars, protein, salt and vitamins per 100 g and per serving, straight from the lookup.
Allergen and diet checks
Read ingredients, allergens, traces and vegan, vegetarian and palm-oil-free flags to warn shoppers about products that do not fit their diet.
Catalog and inventory enrichment
Fill in product name, brand, quantity, categories and packaging for a list of UPC or EAN codes in a spreadsheet or inventory system instead of typing them by hand.
Barcode validation
Check that a code has a valid check digit and expand UPC-E to its full form before you store it or send it to a supplier.
Cosmetics and pet food lookups
Limit a lookup to the beauty or pet food databases with the source parameter to get ingredients and labels for those product types.

API.SH vs the official Barcode Lookup API
There is no official worldwide barcode product database: GS1 assigns barcodes but does not publish an open product lookup. Commercial databases such as Barcode Lookup and Go-UPC sell access by plan, and open product databases publish data under the ODbL. API.SH looks codes up in those open databases and returns one JSON record with source and license fields.
Barcode Lookup, Go-UPC and Barcode Report sell larger retail catalogs with images and prices on monthly plans; API.SH is pay per call and strongest on food, cosmetics and pet food with full ingredients and nutrition. Note that API Ninjas' and BarcodeAPI.org's barcode APIs generate barcode images rather than look products up.
Barcode Lookup API questions
What barcode data can I get?+
One product per barcode from /barcode/v1/lookup: name, generic name, brands, quantity, serving size, categories, labels, origins, manufacturing places, countries, stores, packaging, ingredients, allergens, traces, additives, vegan, vegetarian and palm-oil-free flags, and nutrition facts per 100 g and per serving, plus the source and license of the record.
How much does the Barcode Lookup API cost?+
Every Barcode Lookup endpoint costs 1 credit per call. On a monthly plan 1,000 credits cost $1 (Starter is $50/month for 50,000 credits). Pay-as-you-go is $2 per 1,000 credits, with top-ups from $15 that never expire.
Is there a free barcode lookup API?+
Yes. Every account gets 1,000 free credits every month. That is 1,000 calls to /barcode/v1/lookup at 1 credit each. The open product databases behind the lookup are free open data too; API.SH adds barcode validation, one JSON shape and no-code tools.
Where does the data come from?+
From open product databases for food, cosmetics, pet food and other products, published under the Open Database License (ODbL). Each record's source and license fields tell you where it came from, so you can give the attribution the license asks for.
Do I need keys for the underlying sources?+
No. One API.SH key is all you need.
Which barcode types are supported?+
EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E and GTIN-14. The check digit is verified and UPC-E is expanded to its full code before the lookup.
How do I find a product by its barcode?+
Send the digits as gtin to /barcode/v1/lookup. If the code is in the open databases you get the product record; if not, the response says nothing was found. Coverage is best for food, cosmetics and pet food.
How do I get started?+
1. Sign up at api.sh. 2. Copy your API key. 3. Call /barcode/v1/lookup with gtin=3017624010701. Request examples and every parameter are in the docs at https://api.sh/docs. You can also use the JS or Python SDK, Google Sheets, Zapier, Make, n8n or the MCP server at https://api.sh/mcp.
